Meet our Facilitator
Hello! My name is Adam MacDonald and I have been studying and working in education for just shy of ten years. My experience includes teaching grades 2-12 in both Alberta and BC, but much of my focus has been on developing and implementing integrated and inclusive inquiry models in the intermediate and middle-school grades. I have been lucky enough to be able to work in multi-grade classrooms for the majority of my career, and have gained an increased understanding about how skills build on one another as students grow and learn. My work as a Learner Support Teacher, planning for students with exceptionalities, and my graduate studies in Special Education have helped me to also understand that no matter where a student is academically, socially, or emotionally, they can always learn and build their skills.
I believe that the best way to get students interested in learning is by including them in the decisions being made about their education. I feel it is important to give students increased agency as they develop into adults so that they know how to make decisions about their learning before their formal K-12 education ends. I also believe that learning should be integrated, as most tasks in life are not limited to one subject area.
I live in Sparwood, BC and have spent the majority of my life in the Elk Valley, save for a year on exchange in Germany, my time studying at the University of Lethbridge, and 5 years teaching and studying in the Interior of BC. I moved back home shortly before the pandemic started and have been closely watching the developments in education over the past year. Seeing both parents and teachers struggle without much support, I began to think about how I could use my experience and knowledge to help the situation — and thus MIESS was born.
For an example of my pedagogy in work, please watch the video below, which showcases a model of education I helped establish a few years ago. And, if you would like to contact me to set up a consultation, please fill out the form below the video.
Cheers,
Adam MacDonald
